HOW TO JOIN
FIRST STEPS
If you are a resident of South Australia or the Northern Territory, of good character, believe in a God or Supreme Being and are 18 years or older, then you may qualify to join the Freemasons of SA & NT. While the requirements for becoming a Freemason are simple, the process is a formal one, as it has been for hundreds of years.
The first step to becoming a Freemason is to talk to one (‘to be one ask one’ or 2B1ASK1). Don't worry if you don’t know a Freemason, contact us by completing our the below form and someone from our Membership Committee will meet with you.
Choosing the right lodge is very important as you’ll spend most of your Masonic career with the members of that lodge, so we’ll guide you towards one near where you live that would suit. You might visit that lodge after a meeting one evening and join the festive board (dinner) to get an idea of the members, the vibe of the lodge etc.
To petition (join) a lodge you’ll need to complete an application form, which needs to be signed by your nominator and seconder; these men will also mentor you along as you become a Freemason. Your petition then gets read at the next lodge meeting along with a description of your character from your nominator, and the lodge’s board of inquiry then takes the reins, checking your references and background. This is done for the good and information of the lodge, just as visiting the festive board is done for your own good.
At a subsequent lodge meeting the members of the lodge hold a ballot (vote) for your joining, and if that is successful then a date can be set for your initiation. On the day of your initiation you will be asked to pay your lodge dues (annual fees, usually a couple of hundred dollars), and should the initiation ceremony be successful, by the end of the night you’ll be an Entered Apprentice, or 1st Degree, Freemason.
